How To Calculate Surrender Value of LIC Policy Jeevan Anand

How To Calculate Surrender Value of LIC Policy Jeevan Anand

According to the policy documents the surrender value of LIC policies is defined as

Guaranteed surrender value of LIC Jeevan Anand:
“After 3 years of active policy, Minimum 30% of all the premiums excluding first year premium and also if there is any bonus vested for the policy.. Also if any extra premium is paid towards Accident benefit, it will also be excluded.”

LIC’s Money back policy (with profit):
"Guaranteed surrender value is 30% of the basic premium paid excluding the first years payment and all survival benefits paid earlier"

In all of the the LIC Policies the catch lies in bonus value.
LIC Bonuses are not cash values but they are additional cover values, which the beneficiary get in case of death or paid to you in cash at the end of the tenure. So the bonuses which are reversionary i.e. declared today but paid at the end are not to be understood in the usual sense of bonus, which is a cash amount available/paid immediately.
i.e: At times of surrender you will only get today's value of final bonus

LIC Jeevan Anand Surrender Value Calculation Formula:

PAID up Value = [No of years premium paid * S.A /Policy Term] + [Bonus * S.A/1000] ( The first year premium is excluded in this case)
SPECIAL SURRENDER VALUE = Surrender value factor * Paid up value /100

Or
Special Surrender value = {Basic Sum Assured X (Number of Premiums Paid/Total Number of Premiums Payable) plus total bonus received}X Surrender Value Factor.

LIC Jeevan Anand Surrender Value Calculation Example:

Let us suppose Policy Started in 2007
 Sum Assured: 3,00,000
Yearly premium: 15,916
 Bonus accumulated till now: 67,200
Policy Term: 20 Yrs.
Premiums Paid so far : 5
Surrender Value: 30% *(5*15,916) + Final Bonus in today's term
so the surrender value in this case will be Rs 43,453

LIC Endowment Policy Surrender Value

As an approximate benchmark in a 20 yr endowment plan after 3 yrs we get @1 premium back, after 5 yrs @2.5 premium , after 12 yrs @12 premium back and then after that surrender value is more than the premiums paid and so on

Should I Surrender My LIC Policy?

Ideally You should make your policy "Paid Up" i.e stop making any more payments but keep your policy in force till maturity instead of surrendering the policy. This will give you cover of number of years policy has been in force (i.e 5/20 or 25% of 3,00,000 = 75,000 in our case) + Bonus accumulated so far i.e 67,200 at maturity. So on making this policy paid up you will get 142,200 on maturity  for investing Rs 79,200 or you can get out at a loss by Taking Rs 45,000 now.

  1. Dear Blogger
Thanks for this excellent page. This is extremely helpful. I was reently coaxed into buying a large Jevan Anand policy. Term 17 years, sum assured 35 lacs, annual premium 2.4 lacs. I started last year, but I realize that I was made a fool of and I want to get rid of theis policy asap. My questions are:
    a) If I were to surrender at 3 years, and the bonus rate was consistently 43 per 1000 for 3 years, what would be the surrender value?
    b) If I kept the policy as paid up after 3 years, what would I get at the end of the term?
    c) Is it possible to put the policy for 'paid up' before 3 years are over.

    Looking forward for your reply

    1. Hi IM
      Here are your answers
      a) If you surrender after 3 years you will get approximately around 2.4 lacs back( 1 premium is the thumb rule for 20 year plan exact values only LIC can confirm)
      b) If you make your policy paid after 3 years (you will not get the bonuses) you will get approximately 6.18 lakhs at maturity.
      c) You cannot make the policy paid up before 3 years are over.
My suggestion is you should make the policy paid up after at least 5 years to get the bonuses you need to pay at least 5 premiums. In case you make the policy paid up after 5 years you will get approximately 17 lakhs 81 thousand at maturity based on assumption of 43 per thousand bonus every year ( Do note that all the values are approximation and final values may be different)

    2. Dear Blogger
Many thanks for your reply. I see your point. I will probably pay up for 5 years and then stop and make it paid up.

    3. IMBlue, I would suggest not to continue this junk policy. you will get 50L insurance coverage in term insurances with just paying 10-12K/year. Remaining 2.3L you can keep it in FD, Which will give you very good return compare to this policy. Don't make the mistake again.

    4. Are you sure after paying for continuous 5 years for Jeevan Anand policy, we can stop paying premium and we will get the maturity amount after 20 years as I have 20 year plan. Please explain in details...

    1. Hi B
based on your vested bonus i realize you have 3 policies of 1 lakh,5 lakh and 10 lakh sum assured. LIC Bonuses for Jeevan Anand have been paid at the rate of Rs 45 per 1000 sum assured and Rs 47 per thousand in last 7 years Assuming 45 as bonus rate (conservative) and taking FAB of 2012. Your maturity values will be approximately
1.) Policy with sum assured 1 Lakh maturing in 2026: Maturity Value 2,02,700
2.) Policy with sum assured 5 lakh maturing in 2030: Maturity value 10,71,500
3.) Policy with sum assured 10 lakh maturing in 2042: Maturity value 20,47,000

these values may be higher or lower as per LIC's bonus rates

    1. The Guaranteed minimum surrender value of this policy is 32,433 Rs. However Special Surrender value that LIC is Likely to give you would be around Rs 84,509. All of these are approximate numbers and actual value may differ. The calculation is shown in the post above. surrender value factor has been assumed for your case to be 40.22%

Now I wish to reduce the premium by half and either surrender half of the policies or make them paid up to invest the ammount to buy term policy. The vested bonus till date for all these policies is 20850 each.

  38. Dear Admin,

I think I was taken for a ride by my LIC agent. Im 38 yrs old and this April I asked for a Jeevan Anand policy for max. 15 yrs term. He took a cheque of 64,491 and I saw the amount being deducted from my bank. Only recently I was able to receive the policy papers and was shocked to see that instead of one policy he had made 12 policies of 1 lakh sum assured. The policy term ranges from 20 yrs to 32 yrs!! (until I'm 70). How should I tackle this issue with LIC ?

    1. I do not want so many policies varying from 20 - 32 years for sure. Can they change it to one single policy of max 15 years term ? I'm not bothered about what the sum assured will be.
    2. Can they cancel it and pay my money back ? I will be more than happy to do so.
    3. I had only signed on one application form. If they have given me 12 policies..doesn't it mean they forged my signature on all those application forms ? If they do not agree to either consolidate or pay my money back...can I complain against LIC for forging my signature ?
    4. The money from my bank was deducted on 11th April 2013 where as the payment receipt (a Block receipt) shows the date of March 30th 2012. Does this give me any loop hole to complain against LIC ?
    5. I do not want to loose the money I paid and will be happy with just doing what is necessary. Please suggest.

    Thanks
    C Nair

  86. Hi Admin Sir,

Many thanks for providing such details. I think this LIC business runs purely on selling gimmics, people's ignorance about basic investing discipline. I have also been victim of this trap.
I purchased Jeevan Anand Sum assured Rs.100000/- in 2005 premium Rs. 4928 for 20 years. I made it paid up after paying six annual premiums. Another policy Jeevan Saral Rs.750000/- Annual premium Rs.360030 for 25 years in 2010. I will make it paid up in 2014 after paying five premiums. Now please suggest how I would be better off. By withdrawing the money of Jeevan Anand in 2014 and Jeevan Saral in 2015 and investing the same in PPF or by holding it till maturity. Please compare with PPF by considering 8.5% flat rate till 2025 and 2035 respectively and suggest.

I have taken LIC Jeevan Anand plan no 78 with SA as 10 lacs and half yearly premium of 34420. I have paid 3 years premiums till now and the vested bonus is around 87000 (as displayed in LIC portal). As I strongly believe that I made a wrong step and now I would like to take one of the below decision and need your suggestion / inputs to choose the correct one.

    1) Will it be better in anyway to continue with the policy ?

    2) Surrender the policy and take what ever amount I will get (I think I will get around 1 lac) and invest it somewhere and for insurance take a Term Policy (I am 26 years old) ?

    3) Make this policy paid up ( is it possible for paid up after 3 years ) Or should I need to pay till 5 year and then paid up ?

    Please help me out.

  132. Dear Admin,

I too am an unfortunate Jeevan Anand policy holder. And I must also admit that I have no clear understanding of how this policy really works. Gone through many posts here about surrendering the policy. Did some calculations as you suggested, but it comes far below my expectations. Not sure if I did that correctly. Please help me understand whether it would be a good idea for me to surrender my policy:

    Commencement Date: 15/06/2004
    Sum Assured: 8,00,000/-
    Yearly premium: 56,500/-
    Vested Bonus: 340800
Policy Term: 74 Yrs (Premium Payment Term :16 Yrs)

If I surrender now, what is the amount that LIC is going to pay me? Considering that I have already completed 10 years out of 16, would it be a good idea to wait for another 6 years, as they also offer a life coverage for the amount equal to sum assured.
    Please share your thoughts.

    Regards,
    Jacob

  161. Hello Admin,

I too wanted to stop my LIC policy. here are my details:

Policy Started in the year 2010
    Sum Assured: 3,00,000
    half yearly premium: 16043
    Bonus accumulated till now: 51000
    Policy Term: 15 years
    Premiums Paid from : 03/05/2010 till 03/05/2016
Money back with drawn : in the year of 2014, 30% of sum assured, i.e, Rs.90,000

  163. this is a very insightful article.

I too was conned into getting this worthless policy, well, when I started my career and had absolute no knowledge on how this works.

I Pay a monthly premium of Rs. 4310 which translates to Rs. 51720 per annum. The Sum assured is 10,0000 and bonus vested till date is Rs. 145000.

I want to close this useless policy and instead invest this amount in Equity or debt.

    I have following questions:

    1. I have an ECS setup for the premium. How to I stop this? Will contacting bank to stop this ECS be sufficient or do I have to obtain some sort of authorisation from LIC?

    2. How do I mark this policy as paid up? Will simply stopping the premium be sufficient?

    3. In case I permanently want to stop this policy, how much loss would I be making?

    Thank you for your help!
